The exhibition and education programmes are developed with equal importance, and are continually intertwined. The changing programme includes exhibitions, artist residencies, off-site projects and artist-led activities, ensuring Camden Arts Centre remains a dynamic place for seeing, making and talking about art.

Built in 1897 and originally a library, the grade II listed building became an arts centre in the 1960s.

Director Jenni Lomax joined Camden Arts Centre in 1990, and has established an internationally acclaimed programme of exhibitions, residencies, artists’ projects and public events. She also led the organisation through a major building refurbishment scheme which was completed in early 2004 by Tony Fretton Architects.

The beautiful and sensitively designed building now combines the original Victorian Gothic features with a contemporary urban design to enhance space and light.

The gallery has had an extremely successful residency programme which was launched 20 years ago, featuring many great talents in the art world. To celebrate this anniversary, three artists selected from the past programme, have each been invited to the Artist’s Studio for a week to develop a new collaborative piece of work. Each of these projects will the form the basis of the Spiral 2010 Festival programme.

Spiral 2010 Festival will take place on the bank holiday weekend of 28 and 29 August, featuring Serena Korda, Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa and Hayley Newman with Andrea Mason and the Gluts. Activities and performances will run throughout the weekend with times events linked to the residency projects, and free activities for all ages taking inspiration from the exhibitions by Jim Hodges and Breda Beban.

In the Drawing Studio, families can drop in to work with Matthew Krishanu using Camden Arts Centre’s garden as a starting point from drawing and printing activities. In the Ceramics Studio, families can have a go at sculpture with Viyki Turnbull combining clay with various materials to create unfired experiments to take home.

We’re very excited to see these artists back at the Camden arts centre and are looking forward to this in August!
