The aim of the exhibition is to present different ways of addressing an extended notion of landscape: landscape as the spirit of a place, touching both space and time.

Dee Ferris’ new paintings, completed just before the exhibition, mark her continuing exploration of landscape as mirror of our desires.

Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s works, one from the early 1990s and the other from 2012, address her interest in biography and literature as primary source of her practice.
The exhibition will also include two works by Welsh potter Adam Buick: his ceramics literally incorporate fragments of the landscape they are made in, to highlight a deep identification with the Welsh countryside.

Noor Ali Chagani’s work in the exhibition, titled “Silence”, was made in 2012 as a tribute to Salman Taseer: Mr Taseer was the Governor of Punjab and was assassinated in 2011 by one of his bodyguards for having spoken against the so-called “blasphemy laws” in Pakistan.

David Jones (1895-1974) was a writer and artist, one of the foremost British modernist poets. He trained with Eric Gill and lived at Ditchling, Sussex and at Capel-y-Ffin, in the Black Mountains, with the Gill family. The print in the exhibition is from a woodblock executed in 1925.

Back by popular demand, The LooP will be Japanese born painter Tokio Aoyama’s second solo art exhibit in the capital in as many years. Featuring exclusive paintings from his 2013 Dogū art series and yet to be released publication project with Grammy award winning music producer Shafiq Husayn.
Inspired by painters such as Salvador Dali, Mati Klarwein, Basquiat, and Frida Kahlo, Tokio also channels through his art the essences of nature, peace and love embodied by musicians such as Bob Marley, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Stevie Wonder and Doug Carn.

His LooP exhibit will pull you into a magical realm of birth, life, death, transformation and reincarnation. Infused with ancient Japanese mythology, tradition, and shamanistic rites. Tokio tastefully creates acrylic realities where ancient astronauts in alien spacesuits dance to the sounds of modern millennium musicians.

Tokio left his mark on the capital before leaving in 2012 with an eye catching mural outside the popular Passing Clouds venue in Dalston. The much talked about piece featured the heads of music icons Bob Marley and Nina Simone being held aloft by    a music deity located in a far away cosmic world.

His work has since been featured in the Tate Modern. The artwork was commissioned by London griot Akala for his newly released album Thieves Banquet. Not only has the man from Japan known as Tokes made strong ties in Europe, you could also find him networking in LA while hanging out with the likes of Snoop Lion and George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic family.

Tokio’s art is his soul and the philosophy of his life. This not to missed exhibition sees him mixing myth, music and the meditative states of consciousness he is inspired by into a palette of soulful visionary art.

In our ever faster moving world, Wood sat still in the public space of a fast food restaurant and recorded many, many separate moments for over a decade, gradually bringing them together in this impressive series of paintings, perhaps best described as modern-day genre scenes.
Wood was captivated by the breadth and diversity of activity and people she encountered there and, as unofficial artist-in-residence, created thousand of sketches from which she developed these finely crafted portraits which reflect the changing face of a town, Swindon, and its community.

The compositions dispel myth of a fast-food outlet as being a place of transit, merely functional and impersonal. They contrast the hub of everyday life in a busy fast-food outlet and the stillness of the individual vignettes which slow down the pace of life or preserve a moment, highlighting individual experiences of, for example: loneliness, romance and young love, parent-child, a quick lunch-break, the highlight of the day, regular visits, fast-food/slow-eating.

Compositionally the paintings are made up of real life observations (The artist made thousands of sketches from real life ‘artist in residence’) and formed her compositions from these separate drawings to create new groupings or frames that convey her particular sensibility towards the place and people.

PAULINE AMOS opens her new and provocative exhibition, THIS HUMAN BEAST, at the Hix Gallery today. First making her mark in 2005 having valued her own painting at £1.3m,Amos is set to cause a stir again amongst the industry.

The exhibition is both a comment and a complaint: about weaponry, ongoing wars and the relentless violence of the world in which we live.

Amos has created a journey through weaponry, with canvas paintings hanging from meat hooks to reflect carcasses and drawings of the human form featuring intestines reconfigured as atom bombs.

Sick to death with the incessant, inescapable drone of warfare in the media landscape, THIS HUMAN BEAST prompts us to ask when will it all end? When will the blur within the blur of ghastly blood soaked newsreels become a cry of ‘enough?’

Amos comments: ‘With drones infesting the skies and new types of warfare. Civilization doesn’t stop violence; it just hides it more and more. We live on the veneered surface of politeness meanwhile not very far away death and carnage carries on.’

Showcasing at the Hix Gallery from the 29^th May, and drawing inspiration from sources as disparate as Theodore Adomo’s critical theory, and stark photos of an abattoir, Amos’ work strips away the veneer and puts death and violence under the spotlight.

The title of this exhibition, ‘Dream and Metaphmorphosis’ relates directly to Ovid’s epic poem, whose first line gives the reader the basis for the work – In nova fert animus mutatas dicere formas/ corpora; (“I intend to speak of forms changed into new entities”). We are in the realm of transfiguration, where people and things are in a state of flux and change. The ‘dream’ aspect may refer to childhood fantasy and even unconscious desires.

The Chelsea Fringe Festival, now in its second year, is sweeping every kind of venue all across London – they have even arrived to Vienna!

And Oxford House (Oh!) will be part of it not one or two but with four events!

To get started, Oh! will host a series of workshops based on different activities and visual delights, leading you from the silk worm to modern day textiles. Organised by Colour Collective, children and adults will enjoy “cocooning…”, “history of dyeing…” and “why wear it…”

Building on this, how about an unexpected evening and a Dinner to Dye For. A mix of experiences from dyeing to testing natural cocktails, and a pop-up dinner using London’s botanicals.

“Biscuit. I’ve kept you half” is a two-person exhibition of paintings by Bartholomew Beal and Eleanor Watson presented by Isis Phoenix Arts and Jason Colchin-Carter at the Mall Galleries.

On the evening of the private view, there will be two performances, the first at 7.30 pm of an extract from Samuel Beckett’s Endgame by ‘Theatre with Legs’ – Jessica Murrain and Lucy Bairstow. Immediately followed by a musical performance by the highly acclaimed violinist and songwriter – Diana Yukawa, performing pieces from her new album – ‘Finding The Parallel’.

Biscuit. I’ve kept you half. is a line taken from the play Endgame by Beckett, and reflects the artists’ response to this renowned black comedy. The title is taken from dialogue between the two bucket-dwellers in the play, Nagg and Nell. As with much of Beckett’s work, this line is loaded: on one level it is tender and affectionate and yet simultaneously a stark reminder of the farcical situation the two characters find themselves in. Their practices are quite distinct and yet they are brought together by their mutual interest in the power of painterly narrative and importance of the undefined; what is left out and merely inferred. Bartholomew paints people in ethereal, unreal spaces; characters that may seem lost or even out of place. Whereas Eleanor paints empty interiors, where we sense the absence is tangible. Central to the exhibition will be two same sized paintings by each artist hung opposite to each other responding to the play, as a direct comparison of their practices.

Bartholomew’s piece, ‘Glum Clown’ is a perfect representation of Beckett’s ‘Theatre of the Absurd’. Clov, could well be a truncated version of ‘clown’: the would-be source of amusement is melancholic. The work itself is boldly handled, an austere portrait, set off by the comic red nose, the old-fashioned top hat and colourfully spotted necktie. This clown appears to be from another time, yet is distinctly contemporary as his blue body becomes lost to broad brushstrokes and interplays with the neutral colour planes of the background creating confident gestures and marks. Bartholomew relishes the phenomenon and explores the phantasmagorical.

Eleanor’s work in contrast is more structured, with an architectural awareness of interior spaces. In her ‘Untitled’ piece we have a striking examination of line and form, with key pictorial elements like the rug, chair, table and lamps creating a strongly geometric framework. Eleanor’s work is reminiscent of a stage set, with the props and furniture fixed and placed and all that required are the actors, who may have just exited left or are waiting to make their entrance. The only certainty is the absence and the subtle clues to the undisclosed narrative.

It is therefore no surprise that both artists were both drawn to Beckett’s masterpiece, a literary bond that unites and creates a point of departure. Bartholomew Beal and Eleanor Watson have very distinctive painting styles and differ in subject matter, technique and application yet there is a common thread at work here.

We have in these two artists, the representation of absence and even loss, together with the uncharted realms of the imagination and reverie. When faced with the inevitable ‘endgame’ of our existence, we have only laughter left when the tears have run dry.

The Brady Arts Centre, off Brick Lane, hosts the debut solo exhibition of painter and sculptor Satdeep Grewal.

This is an intelligent, thought-provoking, and confident debut by a bold and exciting new artist.  The exhibition is called Rough Science, and the catalogue describes it as “work themed around scientific imagery and mathematics…  abstract forms and tactile surfaces to convey the inquisitiveness and fluidity permeating seemingly objective, rigid approaches to the world.”  Grewal achieves this in different ways.  Some of the works play with perception or the “gap” between “reality” and “lived experience” – Pylon #1 and Pylon #2 give us two versions of an electricity pylon: one strong and hard with crisp clear lines; the second, somehow oozing and crude and strange, like an image lifted directly from the unconscious or like a sick thing.  Other pieces draw on scientific principles or concepts such as the golden ratio in Grewal’s bandage sculpture Spiral [pictured]. The slowly decaying and shifting malleable elements of the vivid and menacing Carcinoma are based on a type of cancer.  Still some of the works seem to invoke or hint at a kind of magical or fantastical sense of “science” – part medieval, part futuristic: often, in a kind of alchemy.  “I like to play with the reciprocity between organic processes and man-made forms like architecture and everyday objects,” Grewal explains. “Philosophically, I am interested in breaking down binaries such as science vs the unscientific, maths vs. the unmathematical, and exploring how these different stand-points are essentially part of one another.”

Grewal is subversive in a consistently challenging way, and so imbues ordinary objects and ordinary experiences with new power.  In Train to Liverpool #1 and Train to Liverpool #2 you feel you are looking at a dream-scape, or a sea-scape, or the mythical home of a mythical sea monster. Fleet Pond takes a section of Fleet Nature Reserve and plays with colour and depth to give what should be an innocuous scene, an eerie and hallucinogenic quality. Layers of gleaming and amorphous cerulean blobs swim amongst pale ochre forms in Idea Form, which is framed by a fine maze of grey whorls and blood red stitching. It’s called “Idea” but you want to touch it.

Throughout the exhibition, colours and materials are used in a bold and creative but understated way that points to Grewal’s confidence and ambition.  This is an exhibition that rewards a second view.

The Chelsea Fringe Festival, now in its second year, will be an explosion of art, spectacles, horticultural happenings and community celebrations all around London during May and June. A new chance for Londoners to connect with nature without leaving town, after the success of last year: more than 100 events across London and 45,000 attendants.

This spring, as part of this flowered massive happening, the Oh! Gallery exhibition, Oh3, will feature three completely different individual artists, working in diverse mediums; all exploring the theme of nature, plants and gardens.

Emma Hardicker works as a printmaker and designer from her studio based in the old Bird’s Custard Factory in Birmingham. As Emma explains, the inspiration to create her work comes from her walks around the Midlands, but also from urban life.
Through ‘Oh3‘, we will have access to part of her stratified production. The botanical leaves of the Midlands come to Oxford House, transforming beautiful and inspired printings.

Lesley Raven is part of the London College of Fashion. She is much more than a textile artist and designer. Part of Lesley’s career has been focused on the relationship between the arts and health. She has participated in the executive committee for London Arts in Health Forum and has developed several community focused projects; working with schools, charities, galleries and healthcare settings.
Don’t miss the opportunity to see the result of Lesley’s art work, often inspired by the will to capture or as Lesley says herself, “the beauty inherent in the everyday that are often ignored.”

Completing our trio, Oh! Gallery welcomes Sandro Migliarini with a series of paintings. Nothing better describes how these unique pieces of art were born, than his own evocative words:

… ‘By intense observation from the true nature: earth, stone, grass, trees, water, sky, clouds, light, odour, wind. A nature without men, but where they are reminded by the shape of the clouds for a moment, like a game of shadows (the reference to the human presence is only an echo of shapes and sounds, but it is temporary and not required)’.

With that let’s welcome spring (better late than never) and get down to the Oh! Gallery and join in with the spirit of The Chelsea Fringe, at Oxford House.

Part of the Movable Borders: Here Come the Drones! exhibition at Furtherfield Gallery.

In a post-national age, where “territorial and political boundaries are increasingly permeable”[1], what has become of the borderline? How is it defined, and what technologies are used to control it?

Movable Borders is an ongoing research project that begins to explore possible answers to these questions through facilitating discussions around the ‘reterritorialisation’ of the borderline in the information age. Participants are invited to investigate the use of cybernetic military systems such as remotely piloted aircraft (drones) and the Disposition Matrix, a dynamic database of intelligence that produces protocological kill-lists for the US Department of Defense.

The Reposition Matrix aims to reterritorialise the drone as a physical, industrially-produced technology of war through the creation of an open-access database: a ‘reposition matrix’ that geopolitically situates the organisations, locations, and trading networks that play a role in the production of military drone technologies.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
During the workshop, participants will investigate the weapons industry and intelligence agencies that operate in the background of the drone campaigns ongoing in the Middle East. Information will be gathered through a diverse range of sources – from corporate publications to leaked document repositories. The information gathered during the research session will then be used as the basis for the collaborative development of a new world map: a diagram that exposes the complex networks of control and influence that exist at the core of the drone campaigns.

WHO IS THIS FOR?
Cartographers, designers, artists, activists, political scientists, journalists, and anybody with a strong interest in understanding and discussing the materiality of the drone wars are invited to participate.

Dave Young
Dave Young is an artist, musician and researcher currently studying the Networked Media course at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, NL. His research deals with the Cold War history of networked culture, exploring the emergence of cybernetic theory as an ideology of the information age and the influence of military technologies on popular culture.
