Roy Petley is a contemporary British artist renowned for his impressionist oil paintings. Petley paints en plein air, which is a French expression meaning “in the open air”, to create his popular works that depict the wide expanse of English beaches and the gentle allure of Venetian landscapes. His works have been likened to those of John ConstableEdward Seago, and Campbell Mellon, British painters whose styles were influenced by the Barbizon School and Impressionism. Beginning life in a children’s home, he became one of the first artists to open an art gallery in Cork Street, a prestigious street lined with art galleries in London’s Mayfair. His works are popularly collected by British royalty, including Her Late Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

In 2003, Roy opened his gallery on Cork Street, one of the most prestigious streets for art in Europe. The same rebellious and persevering nature that had carried him through the tough parts of his life caused him to want to open a gallery where an artist was judged on talent alone rather than accolade.

    Dear Mr Petley

We have recently purchased two of your paintings (both beach scenes, one with a man reading a paper and a darker one which looks like Cromer)from a gallery in Tunbridge Wells.

We just wanted you to know what pleasure these paintings have given us and to thank you very much.We live in Uckfield where I understand you lived for a while. Kind Regards Bill Tipping
